Sign up before June 13th and get a $10 discount (per player) off the fees shown below! The age below is the age of the player on July 31.
What is your refund policy for rec soccer (Hurricanes refunds are set on a team by team basis)? Through July 17 - Full Refund (rec players only) July 18 through July 31 - fees must be paid in full, a minimum of $35 will be deducted from any refund August 1 through August 31 - fees must be paid in full, maximum refund will be 50% of fees After August 31 - no refunds are given unless the player is injured to the point he/she cannot return to the field prior to the end of the season. Injury refunds will be handled on a case-by-case basis. I can't afford the fees. Is there a program to assist families with the cost? VCYS has a limited amount of scholarship money available to help families needing assistance. Generally we ask that the family pay at least a portion of the fees so we can help as many children as possible. We can also offer payment plans to allow you to sign your player up, get them on the fields, and then pay off the balance over the next few weeks or months. For families receiving assistance, there are plenty of opportunities to contribute your time and efforts to help the league. Please contact registrar@vcys.org or call Patti at (760) 751-1355 to request assistance. All assistance is held in confidence. I've seen U10 or U14 used in soccer, what does the "U" mean? For age classification purposes soccer has adopted the term "Under". As an example, a player who is eight years old is Under 9 or U9; a player who is 12 years old is Under 13 or U13. Add the G for girl and the B for boy and a six year old girl player would be a GU7. The table above contains the players actual ages. When is the season? Practices can start on August 1st. The first game of the season is the Saturday after Labor Day weekend, the last game of the season is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. A typical season has 9 to 10 league season games. Not including one week dedicated to Mid-Season Tournament and one weekend off for the Halloween Carnival. We plan on being gone much of August on vacation, what about that? This is not a problem. Our coaches understand family activities. Please let your coach know whenever you will miss a team function (game/practice), it is important so they can plan accordingly. What do we get for our fees? The league provides: uniforms, team equipment, pictures, field maintenance, referees (where applicable), league equipment, field rental fees (where applicable), Risk Management for coaches and administrators, a great organization and a fantastic experience! What are my responsibilities as a parent or guardian of a player in the league? VCYS is an entirely volunteer run league. All parents are expected to help out on the team or league level. There are many opportunities for you to help - coach, assistant coach, manage, team parent, field set-up, clean-up, closing and more. Talk to your coach or a board member to find out where help is needed. What do we need to provide? A player with a good attitude ready to have some fun, soccer shoes, and shinguards. You should always send your player with water or a sports drink and if they have a ball have them bring that to practices too. Ball Sizes - Div 1, 2, 3 - Size 5 Div 4, 5 - Size 4 Div 6 & Pee Wee - Size 3 I think I would like to help coach or volunteer? Outstanding! Few things are more rewarding than getting out there with your own children! If you are interested in coaching please contact Rick Hall, he's our Director for Recreational Coaches. If you are interested in helping out with the team in other ways just contact the coach, they can NEVER get enough help. If you are interested in helping on the board of directors and having a positive impact on the entire league, contact Todd Maynard. I am thinking about coaching but don't think I know enough. What do I do? No worries at all! We are here to help. First, you are in good company, MANY of our coaches had not coached or even played the sport before coming to the league with their player. Second, there are a number of Educational Coaching Courses put on by CYSA. These courses will absolutely get you over the hurdle and make you comfortable on the field. Third, there are some really great coaches and administrators already in our league. They can be your best resource for help and encouragement. Fourth, check out our Coach's Resources page for help and guidance. What is the league's screening process for coaches and administrators? All of our coaches and administrators are required to complete paperwork, submit fingerprints and go through a background check with the Department of Justice. This is handled confidentially by a third party processor. Once a coach/administrator is in the California Youth Soccer Association system we would immediately receive any updates from the Department of Justice. What is CYSA or CalSouth? California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) or CalSouth sanctions our league. We are member of the organization which hosts 220 Member Leagues, 10,200 Teams, 120,000 Players and 30,000 Coaches and Administrators. They provide the ability to insure our league, provide player insurance, provide registration capabilities, govern a majority of playing rules and are a great source for player development. When do we find out what team we are on? Teams are formed and players are drafted or placed towards end of July. Your coach will contact you before the end of July. All Divisions except Pee Wees are draft divisions. What happens with siblings? When siblings are in the same division, based on age and gender, they will be placed on the same team unless othersise requested. I missed getting my players signed up before the first draft...now what? All players signed up after the 1st draft deadline (July 17th) are placed on a player pool list. These players are placed to teams by a committee of board members during the second week of August. Players will hear from their coaches shortly after that. Players are placed in order to best serve the league and achieve as much parity as possible in the division. I want my player to play for a particular coach or play with a particular player? Most of the divisions are draft divisions, there are NO guarantees or promises as to where your player will end up. With almost 700 players we cannot consider special requests, it just does not work. Your safest bet, if something has to happen, is for you to take a team and draft the players accordingly. The ONLY exception is in the Pee Wee division. We will try to accommodate one request for either a playmate or a coach. Please note: if you pull your player once teams are formed, in the hopes of moving onto a different team and there is no team available (or not the team you desire), you will only be entitled to whatever refund is available based on the date it is requested. Any refund request must be submitted to registrar@vcys.org or PO Box 1028, Valley Center. The refund request date will be based on the date it is received. My player was drafted to a team and I just can't make the scheduling work. What are my options? You have the option of pulling your player from the team and placing them in the late placement player pool. When the committee gets to placing the late players they will consider, NO promises, your needs. The overriding priority is parity within the division. In the meantime your player does not play or practice; they must be assigned to a team to be on the field. When are the practices? This varies greatly depending on the division and your child's coach. Typically there are two practices per week plus game day. The days and times for your child's team are entirely up to your coach. Generally practices are no more than an hour for Pee Wees, an hour for Division 6 and an hour and a half for all other divisions. Practices may start as early as 3:30pm, the last practices end at 7:00pm. The exact times will be up to your coach. When are the games? Games are only on Saturdays. Our fields start as early as 8:00am and are typically closed by 3:00pm. The game time will vary each week as we try to distribute the times across the teams in the division. What are the playing time rules? All recreational players are entitled to play at least half of any game. This is regardless of practice attendance during the week. Coaches have complete discretion as to when during the game and where on the field your player plays. Coaches do have some disciplinary rights; they may sit a player for a game for a disciplinary issue (very, very rare). More than one game requires VCYS Disciplinary Committee involvement. Disciplinary issues involving Red Cards issued by referees are another matter involving the Disciplinary Committee. There are particular rules for Mid-Season Tournament - a player must play at least 50% of the pool play games, if the team makes it to the Semi-Finals or Finals the player must play a portion of each game at the coach's discretion. Where will my players play? Pee Wee - Upper Elementary Field. Divison 6 - Lower Elementary Field. Division 5 - Lower Elementary 'Football' Field. Division 4 - Cole Grade Park. Division 2/3 - Middle School Field. Division 1/2 - Middle School Field. These locations are subject to change at the board's discretion. Field Locations I have a problem I need to get addressed, who do I talk to? Your first place to go is to your coach or team parent. If you cannot get resolution with your coach then take a look at the Contacts List for the league, determine the area of responsibility and contact that person. You are always welcome to contact Todd Maynard, league president. My child is exceptionally skilled, can they play in a higher division? Players are placed in divisions based on age and gender. If your player is exceptionally skilled then they should explore playing in our generally more advanced Hurricane's competitive division. Check out the Hurricane's page to see the teams we have available this year. Competitive player selection is entirely up to the coach of the given team, recreational teams are open to all regardless of skill level. If you chose not to try the competitive side then this is the opportunity for your child to shine in the recreational divison, be a leader to the other players and share their skills and commitment. My child is shy, or not very skilled, or small for their age? Not a problem. While you as the parent may think these things, generally, we have found that once they get out on the field, make just one friend, get comfortable with their coach that it all works out. Especially with the younger teams, Pee Wees and Divisons 6, you'll find our coaches are great at welcoming everyone to their teams. If you think there is a safety issue of some sort then of course we want to take that in to consideration and may make some adjustments. My child has learning or physical disabilities? Please contact the Registrar of the league directly so we can discuss placement for your player. We will make every effort to find the best place for your player to have a great experience within the structure of the league and the divisions. I am thinking of, or my son or daughter are thinking of, becoming a referee. How do we do that? Check out our Referee page.
