How the Hurricanes came to be and 'Where did that name come from?'
In 1991, when Mario Cozzi first formed a BU-15 team he polled the players as to what they’d like to be known as. There were several names tossed out including the Roadrunners, Scorpions, Rattlers, and a few more he doesn’t recall. The name that received the winning vote though was the Hurricanes. Coach Mario asked the players, "Why the Hurricanes, when San Diego is not known for having hurricanes?"

To the best of Coach Mario's recollection the response was because Florida State U (he thinks) had a strong football team that was popular with the boys and so they picked the Hurricanes…it made about as much sense as anything else to the coach from a group of 14 year old teenage boys. And that is how we became known as the Hurricanes.
